A Full Week at SubRosa!

We intend SubRosa to be a vibrant social space, where so much can happen, where so much is possible.  And this week at SubRosa there is a diverse array of happenings going on.  An important aspect of making SubRosa vibrant is your presence at the space.  So come on down this week and be a part of what is happening here.

-Tues. July 23rd-  open for afternoon and evening events
     

       A reading group for the book Nine Tenths of the Law: Property and Resistance in the United States.- 4pm.  How does "property" fit into designs for an equitable society? Nine-Tenths of the Law examines the history of squatting and property struggles in the US, from colonialism to 20th-century urban squatting and the foreclosure crisis of the late 2000s, and how such resistance movements shape the law.
      Zero Waste:  Confronting the Crises- 5-7pm.  Free Skool Presents:  Mindful of the environmental and social crises currently facing the world, this class seeks to find a creative response with the concept of "zero waste." The teachers will give a short history of the concept. From this theoretical background we hope to play with concrete actions, exploring limits, and emphasizing experimentation. We hope to engage in responses that are personal day-to-day action from the ground up and/or collective projects of transformation. Course is in two-parts: first class will be discussion and brainstorming; second class will be reflection, sharing of actions and moving forward.
        Queer Prisoner Support!- 7:30-8:30pm.  Letter writing to queer and trans prisoners. Lists of prisoners, paper, envelops and stamps will be provided, as well as good company. Walls and bars can't keep us apart! In solidarity with all prisoners!

       Homeless United for Friendship and Freedom (HUFF)- 2-4pm: HUFF is Santa Cruz's oldest and most stubbornly persistent grass roots homeless advocacy group. We make trouble for the powers that be and fight institutional human rights abuses.
       Early Christianity- 5pm.  Free Skool Presents: A historical study of early Christianity focusing on the critical period following the death of the historical Jesus to the formation of the faith's major tenets at the Council of Nicea in 325. We will discuss questions like: how do the intellectual descendants of revolutionaries become so orthodox and rigid? Why did Christianity win out over all the competing belief systems? What were the "Lost" Christianities like?
        A Show! Months of Indecision, Whiskey Bliss, Pale Robin!- 7-10pm.  Months of Indecision, and Whiskey Bliss on tour from Olympia! Our local favorite Pale Robin and perhaps a Puppetry performance by some SubRosa staffers. $7 NOTAFLOF

-Thurs. July 25th-  regular open hours 2-7pm
 
       Open Mic- sign-ups at 7:30pm, begins around 8pm:  Come express yourself!  Challenge yourself!  Challenge the audience!  A space for creation and community.  Donations to support SubRosa are appreciated.  This is the last Open Mic for a month since they are not happening in August, and they will resume gloriously in September.

     Teaching Kick Ass Classes and Workshops- 12:30-1:30pm.  Free Skool Presents: How to teach a great class or give a really kick ass workshop so your students leave satisfied and wanting to come back for more. Making a lesson plan. Keeping students engaged. Tips for performance anxiety. Small vs. large group lessons. Dealing with activities and more.

***And a note about a benefit that our neighbors, the Fábrica, is having on Saturday, July 27th, 12-6pm.  They will be a part of the ANORAK ASSEMBLY art market at the Museum of Art and History (at Abbott Square, downtown, S.C.).   This is a sale of handmade sundries featuring recycled materials.  The Fábrica is a great project, peopled by wonderful folks, so support them Saturday, July 27th at the MAH and check out what they have going on!  The Fábrica is a community textile arts and salvage workshop (more info at http://thefabrica.wordpress.com/).

Here is a run-down of the week ahead at SubRosa!

-Tues. July 16th-  open for evening event
       HPV Workshop- 7-9pm: HPV is known to be the cause of virtually all cervical cancers. In the US, half of all cervical cancers are found in folks who have never received a pap smear. Cervical cytology (the pap smear) is the single most effective way to prevent these types of cancer and yet for those of us who have access to, or provide regular screening, the new recommendations suggest less screening, not more. Come learn what modern medicine now understands about HPV after experimenting on our bodies for last 20 years. In this workshop we hope to demystify HPV, abnormal PAP results (ASCUS, Cervical Dysplasia) and discuss some ideas for herbal intervention where appropriate.

       Fridaysare Magic!  A film series to benefit Free Cascadia Witch Camp, 8pm:  The Craft (1996)- A Hollywood look at witchcraft. Ridiculous. A conversation will follow the film. -Sat. July 20th-  regular open hours 3-7pm
       Really Really Free Market, 12-3pm:  No money. No trades. Everything is free. This market is based on a gift-economy and thinks capitalism sucks. Bring food to share. Bring your special items that you don't use but can't throw away (ex. clothes, toys, art supplies, instruments, books and zines...your free box). Bring your special talents to offer people (ex. haircuts, message, reiki...). Come and take what you can use and say thanks! We will have folks to check in with as you arrive. First come first served, space may be limited.

Benefit Show for SubRosa, Sat. Apr. 27th at 7pm

Hello friends and supporters of SubRosa!

Its getting towards the summer months, which is a time when SubRosa needs support to stay open. Many of our friends who volunteer to keep the space open daily are often gone traveling or working on other projects during the summer, which makes it hard for us to afford our RENT.

If you've ever been to a show, or a Free Skool class, a Guerrilla Drive-In, an open mic, a book/speaking event, or just stopped by for coffee or our free lending library of radical literature, please come to this show, Saturday April 27th, 7-10pm, to show your support for us!

Hey All,

SubRosa is looking for artists to display their art on our walls. We have an art show the first Friday of every month with a new artist each month. Typically SubRosa shows emerging artists that have less access to public forums who create innovative,thought provoking art and/or art with an anarchist/radical bent that will fit in our cozy space.
