Fri. April 15th-Sun. April 17th: A weekend of beautiful possibilities

A Weekend of Beautiful Possibilities (note: Anarchist Cafe now at SubRosa!)

There are a variety of different events happening this weekend, most at SubRosa. In part, these events are opportunities for us to come together to share food, dance out hearts out, and talk about what's going on in our town. We'll share beautiful possibilities for making our lives more free.

Friday April 15th

-6pm- barbecue (vegan and non-vegan friendly)...bring food for the grill and some food will be provided, but most importantly come on down so we can enjoy each others' company
-7pm- radical puppet show
-8pm- Emergence Theory Dance Party- DJ set of Guilty Pleasures Dance-Pop & Disaster- Electro from Winoona, MN

Saturday April 16th

-1pm- Parkour: Introduction and intermediate practice in moving about an urban landscape in creative ways. Turn the city into your playground! No experience or superpowers required. Meet at Santa Cruz High (415 Walnut Ave.), and after that...
-2pm- ...a game of capture the flag. Meet at the clock tower.
-6pm- Anarchist Cafe- Now at SubRosa. You're invited to an evening of revelry and learning. Anarchist Cafes are a long-standing tradition in Santa Cruz. Come meet and celebrate with people interested in self-sufficiency, resistance and mutual support.

The night's workshops will include:

*Squatting 101: Awesome squats around the world, and their various purposes. The how and why of squatting in urban and natural settings.
*Ecology Beneath Our Feet: A discussion about our relationship to the land and current threats to local ecosystems.
*Solidarity with Indigenous Resistance: A presentation and discussion.
*Race, Gender and Power: Explore your relationship to race, gender and power through reflecting on clips from a provocative film.
*Immigration Enforcement & "Secure Communities": The legal situation for undocumented immigrants in Santa Cruz, and possible ways to help.
*Anarchy 101: WTF does that actually mean anyway?
*Perspectives on the Middle East Uprising: Governments across North Africa are being toppled by leaderless revolutions. Updates and discussion.
*Small Town Anarchist Organizing: Visiting anarchists from Winona, MN will share observations & host conversations on breaking out of subcultures through aboveground organizing
*Food! Vegan, vegetarian, and omnivorous delicacies
*More fun stuff...

Sunday April 17th

-11am- a delicious brunch (vegan and non-vegan friendly) and again bring food to share and also food will be provided, but most of all bring your wonderful self so we can begin the day together.
-1pm- Mutual Support for Anarchist Projects- a discussion
-5pm- Confronting Whiteness (a Free Skool Santa Cruz class)- in this reading group, we will be exploring the social construction of race through Robert Jensen's The Heart of Whiteness. He argues that any system that denies non-whites their full humanity also keeps whites from accessing their own. Anyone interested in confronting race, racism, and white privilege is welcome.

SubRosa is an anarchist community space run by a collective of committed volunteers. We put energy into SubRosa to create a vibrant community space available for events, classes, and meetings, collaborations and organizing, art and creativity, as well as reading and studying. We are working to create a world guided by mutual support, without coercive control.

Comments on the SubRosa website are fully moderated. As a collective, we agreed that the purpose of the website was to promote SubRosa, not to provide an online place for lively and invigorating debate. We hope that the space itself is where conversations on the nature of anarchism and local projects will take place. That said, we occasionally approve comments that are informative or reflect a viewpoint we feel it is important for website visitors to read.
