SubRosa hosts performances, shows, music, presentations, speakers, film showings, class, workshops, a weekly open mic, and special events. Performances & Music

SubRosa offers a cozy space for intimate, non-amplified shows. While we are not your typical music venue,we do host shows for musicians with whom we feel an affinity. We are particularly intrigued by music that is unique, unusual, or shares our radical perspective.

 

Presentations and Speakers

As part of our desire to further debate and dialogue on subjects related to anarchism, we regularly host presentations and speakers drawn from the local community and from afar. Topics covered may include anti-authoritarian struggles, state repression, history, politics, ecology, indigenous issues, feminism, or identity politics.

Film Showings

SubRosa shows films with the help of long-time community project Santa Cruz Guerilla Drive-In. GDI is an outdoor movie theater under the stars that springs up unexpectedly in the fields and industrial wastelands. Beyond showing great free movies year-round and bringing a broad community together, part of our mission is reclaiming public space and transforming our urban environment

Weekly Open Mic

Harkening back to the long-lost Santa Cruz performing arts venue, What Is Art?, and one of the last remaining Open Mics in this allegedly pro-art town, the SubRosa Open Mic is often standing room only. An opportunity to connect with friends and showcase the incredible creative talent in our community. Music, poetry, and performance. From the mundane to the jaw-droppingly inspirational.

Donations directly benefit this community-supported space. Signups for performance at 7:30 fill up quickly. Bring your creativity and artistic genius.

Special Events

SubRosa also hosts special events, such as the Santa Cruz Anarchist Convergence and Bookfair, the North American Free Skool Conference, occasional anarchist cafes, block parties, and barbecues.
