Dark Side of the Rainbow
(The Wizard of Oz AND 

Dark Side of the Moon)

You've heard the talk, now experience it for yourself!  pairing of the 1973 Pink Floyd album The Dark Side of the Moon with the visual portion of the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. This produces moments where the film and the album appear to correspond with each other. 

                Secret Location is the SubRosa garden courtyard- 703 Pacific Ave.

Bring blankets, pillows and other comfy stuff to nest on down in the courtyard.  We will have some cozy fixings already laid out as well.  Metal folding chairs are also available.

Much is Happening at SubRosa Tuesday July 16th-Wednesday July 24th

Here is a run-down of the week ahead at SubRosa!

-Tues. July 16th-  open for evening event
       HPV Workshop- 7-9pm: HPV is known to be the cause of virtually all cervical cancers. In the US, half of all cervical cancers are found in folks who have never received a pap smear. Cervical cytology (the pap smear) is the single most effective way to prevent these types of cancer and yet for those of us who have access to, or provide regular screening, the new recommendations suggest less screening, not more. Come learn what modern medicine now understands about HPV after experimenting on our bodies for last 20 years. In this workshop we hope to demystify HPV, abnormal PAP results (ASCUS, Cervical Dysplasia) and discuss some ideas for herbal intervention where appropriate.

-Wed. July 17th-  regular open hours 2-7pm
       Homeless United for Friendship and Freedom (HUFF)- 2-4pm: HUFF is Santa Cruz's oldest and most stubbornly persistent grass roots homeless advocacy group. We make trouble for the powers that be and fight institutional human rights abuses.

-Thurs. July 18th-  regular open hours 2-7pm
        Open Mic- sign-ups at 7:30pm, begins around 8pm:  Come express yourself!  Challenge yourself!  Challenge the audience!  A space for creation and community.  Donations appreciated to support SubRosa.

-Fri. July 19th-  regular open hours 2-7pm
       Fridaysare Magic!  A film series to benefit Free Cascadia Witch Camp, 8pm:  The Craft (1996)- A Hollywood look at witchcraft. Ridiculous. A conversation will follow the film. -Sat. July 20th-  regular open hours 3-7pm
       Really Really Free Market, 12-3pm:  No money. No trades. Everything is free. This market is based on a gift-economy and thinks capitalism sucks. Bring food to share. Bring your special items that you don't use but can't throw away (ex. clothes, toys, art supplies, instruments, books and zines...your free box). Bring your special talents to offer people (ex. haircuts, message, reiki...). Come and take what you can use and say thanks! We will have folks to check in with as you arrive. First come first served, space may be limited.

-Sun. July 21st-  regular open hours 2-7pm (a bit irregular sometimes)

-Mon. July 22nd-  closed

-Tues. July 23rd-  open for two evening events   
       Free Skool Presents- Zero Waste:  Confronting the Crises, 5-7pm:  Mindful of the

environmental and social crises currently facing the world, this class seeks to find a creative response with the concept of "zero waste." The teachers will give a short history of the concept. From this theoretical background we hope to play with concrete actions, exploring limits, and emphasizing experimentation. We hope to engage in responses that are personal day-to-day action from the ground up and/or collective projects of transformation. Course is in two-parts: first class will be discussion and brainstorming; second class will be reflection, sharing of actions and moving forward.
       Queer Prisoner Support, 7:30-8:30pm:  Letter writing to queer and trans prisoners. Lists of prisoners, paper, envelops and stamps will be provided, as well as good company. Walls and bars can't keep us apart! In solidarity with all prisoners!

-Wed. July 24th-  regular open hours 2-7pm

        Free Skool Presents- Early Christianity, 5pm:  A historical study of early Christianity focusing on the critical period following the death of the historical Jesus to the formation of the faith's major tenets at the Council of Nicea in 325. We will discuss questions like: how do the intellectual descendants of revolutionaries become so orthodox and rigid? Why did Christianity win out over all the competing belief systems? What were the "Lost" Christianities like?
        A Great Show! 7-10pm:  Months of Indecision, and Whiskey Bliss on tour from Olympia! Our local favorite Pale Robin and perhaps a Puppetry performance by some SubRosa staffers. $7 NOTAFLOF

Saturday Mornings at SubRosa!

Greetings friends, neighbors and strangers,

Come spend your Saturday mornings with us! We here at SubRosa are keeping busy as always and we're inviting you to our wonderful courtyard and shop for some special events the next two Saturdays.

This Saturday, May 11th SCAMP (Santa Cruz Anarchist Mentors and Parents) is hosting a Brunch/Bake Sale to benefit SubRosa! From 10am to 2pm come get yummy baked goods, brunchables and our always delicious coffee and tea. Gluten free and sugar free folks fear not, there will be things for you too. Expect kid cuteness and some live music as well! All proceeds go to SubRosa. Thanks SCAMP!

Next Saturday, May 18th is our monthly Really Really Free Market from 11am to 2pm. Bring your un-used clothes, sporting goods, housewares, records, books, cds, art, toys, food... and find some new treasures. Let's meet each other's needs without money or capitalism! Last RRFM had free tarot readings and we hope more folks will bring services and talents to share. Are you an aspiring hair cutter? Bring your shears.

Its getting towards the summer months, which is a time when SubRosa needs support to stay open. Many of our friends who volunteer to keep the space open daily are often gone traveling or working on other projects during the summer, which makes it hard for us to afford our RENT.

There is a grand jury going on right now to investigate events that happened in Santa Cruz several years ago. Meanwhile, 3 people sit in jail in the Northwest for refusing to provide information to a grand jury there.

    What is a grand jury?
    What do I do if I get a subpoena?
    Why are they investigating people from Santa Cruz?
    How can our communities support grand jury resisters?
    But I'm not a vegan anymore!  They won't try to talk to me, right?

These questions and more will be answered at this event. This event will feature delicious food, knowledgeable speakers, and entertainment. 

This evening is also an opportunity for us to connect with each other about this state repression, as grand juries have been used to harass radical communities, and to continue to create strong and supportive communities.

Indigenous Resistance Film Series, Wednesdays in May at 7pm

The first film screening on Wednesday May 4th, at 7pm is a benefit for local herbalists who are going to Black Mesa to participate in the Spring Health Clinic. $3-$5 donation is appreciated.

**A Note from folks from the Red Root Herbal Collective: As you may already be aware, a series of temporary herbal & bodywork clinics have recently been organized at Big Mountain (Black Mesa, Arizona), the first taking place last Spring. In brief, these free, volunteer-run clinics are a way to support the direct needs of residents of Black Mesa who have been resisting coal mining and forced relocation on their ancestral lands for over three decades. Health care services in these areas are minimal and much knowledge of plant and healing traditions is passing away with the older generations.

It is for these reasons that a member of the Big Mountain community proposed the week-long clinics. Herbalists from Santa Cruz previously co-organized clinics in May of 2010 and in November of 2010 in conjunction with the Fall Caravan of Support. There will be another temporary clinic this May 12-18th.

The last two clinics have relied largely on medicines that participating herbalists brought themselves, supplemented by donations. While this worked in the past, this year we are hoping to receive more extensive donations of medicine and/or money to purchase supplies.
