An intro to The Fábrica (our wonderful neighbor)

We at SubRosa are fortunate to have wonderful neighbors.  There are a handful of do-it-yourself projects that we share space with and appreciate.  One of these projects is The Fábrica.  I have gone to The Fábrica many many times (mostly to use the serger on patches), and the folks staffing made me feel welcome and were very helpful (yeah, they are my friends, but I think they would treat others similarly as well).  They have also do Free Skool Santa Cruz classes and have other workshops as well.

Not everyone needs their own sewing machine, serger and so on, and this project is a great way to share resources and skills and to do so in a social setting.

Here is more about The Fábrica from their website http://thefabrica.wordpress.com/
They also have a in-your-face-book-thingy at https://www.facebook.com/thefabrica

WHAT IS THIS PLACE?

The Fábrica is community workspace where folks can come to learn and share knowledge about textiles arts. This includes Sewing, Knitting, Quilting, Embroidery, Crochet, and Bookbinding, among other arts. The workshop is operated by volunteers and funded by donations from participants. We have sewing machines and the tools one needs for most sewing projects, including a serger! We have limited supplies of knitting materials and tools.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

We value the participation of everyone regardless of their financial contribution. There is no charge to use the shop. Our operating costs are low, so no one is ever turned away for a lack of funds. However, we need some money to pay rent each month. Please consider a 5-10$ donation to help us cover our expenses. Larger contributions are much appreciated and we will provide donors with our tax ID number upon request.

We also have fabrics and yarns available to buy at discount prices. These are materials that have been donated to the shop, so yardage and quality vary.

WHERE AND WHEN?

We’re located at 703 Pacific Avenue in downtown Santa Cruz in the Hub complex. Our entrance is on Spruce St and we share our space with PedX, the bicycle courier company. Get directions here: google map.

The Fábrica is open 5 days a week for open shop/drop-in hours. You can come by during this time and ask questions, get advice, or start working on an epic project.

Open Hours:
Monday 4 pm – 7 pm
Tuesday 10 am – 1 pm
Thursday 2 pm – 8 pm
Saturday 4 pm – 7 pm

Comments on the SubRosa website are fully moderated. As a collective, we agreed that the purpose of the website was to promote SubRosa, not to provide an online place for lively and invigorating debate. We hope that the space itself is where conversations on the nature of anarchism and local projects will take place. That said, we occasionally approve comments that are informative or reflect a viewpoint we feel it is important for website visitors to read.
