happenings happening at SubRosa, March 30th-April 3rd

This Week at SubRosa, March 30th-April 3rd

-Wednesday Mar. 30th: Whow! A Lot Happening!

**Furniture Making- 10am (a Free Skool class)
Creative use of found materials and design techniques will be discussed and demonstrated. Only material availability and motivation will limit us in this class. With Chris.

**Radical Film Night- 7:30pm- Lucio (This month's theme is Crime Pays!)
Lucio is a 2007 documentary. There have been–and are–many anarchists. Quite a few of them have had to commit robberies or manufacture contraband for the cause. A much smaller number have talked strategy with Che or helped Eldridge Cleaver (the leader of the Black Panthers). But there is only one who, in addition to all of the above, put the world’s most powerful bank on the ropes by producing massive amounts of counterfeit Traveler’s Cheques while also not missing a single day at his bricklayer’s job. His name is Lucio Urtubia.

Lucio presently lives in retirement in Paris. During his life, he witnessed–and often participated actively in–some of the most important events of the second half of the 20th century. He experienced the tumult of May ’68 from within, actively supported the Castro regime during its initial stages, and engaged in a whole range of anti-Franco endeavors. However, his biggest “job” took place in the latter part of the 1970s, a time when he was known in the press as “the good bandit” or “the Basque Zorro.” He defrauded the First National Bank (now Citibank) of 3,000 million pesetas in order to finance causes that he supported. Amazingly, his “career” only cost him a few months in prison.

Come watch films with others, eat popcorn (we will bring some, and we encourage you to bring snacks to share as well) and after the screening we can share in a discussion of the films. $2 donation (notaflof)

-Thursday Mar. 31st: Two to-dos

**Community Safety Workgroup- a Free Skool class

"Without police, wouldn't there be chaos?" "What about the bad people?" As anarchists we get asked these legit questions all the time. Don't be fooled by the bland title, this is a project that has the potential to change the world. This is a structured workshop to plan ways to keep our communities safe at all levels. Here are the challenges we'll tackle: new accountability process, community crisis response, cops and alternatives, education, mutual support, solidarity, defense of communities, and making the police obsolete. With this class we jumpstart an ongoing Community Safety Workgroup that will grow beyond free skool. Requirements: Basic familiarity and comfort with the philosophy of anarchism will serve you well here. Be down with basic premises: We want to work collaboratively. We are committed. We are here to act. What we are wanting is possible and desirable. With Wes.

**Open Mic- sign ups 7:30pm and begins 8pm
Come express yourself, challenge yourself, challenge the audience. $5-$7 NOTAFLOF

Some things to do this week!

This Week At SubRosa, March 21st-28th

-Monday Mar. 21st: 2 Free Skool classes!

**Heliostat Hackers: Solar Hacking- 10am (a Free Skool class)
Using the sun to light and heat your indoor location. We will discuss the use of and making of a low cost heliostat to turn the ever moving rays of the sun into a stationary more usable beam. With Chris.

**Wireless Health Damage and Smart Meters- 5-7pm (a Free Skool class)
If you don't trust wireless devices, are you a luddite tin foil hat weirdo or just someone with good instincts? New scientific findings of health damage from wireless microwave radiation emitted by cell phones, wifi, and cordless phones are piling up just as PG&E tries to force its powerful wireless equipped 'smart' meters on every home and business in California. But people are fighting back. Learn the facts about EMF and health, how we can resist fascist privacy invading greenwashed power plots, and construct a relocalized energy system that empowers, not oppresses people. Requirements: We ask that cell phones and wifi be turned off for the class, out of respect for those who are electro-sensitive (which is really all of us). With Joshua Hart.

-Wednesday Mar. 23rd: Whow! A Lot Happening!

**Radical Film Night- 7:30pm- The Sting (This month's theme is Crime Pays!)
The Sting is a 1973 American caper film set in September 1936 that involves a complicated plot by two professional grifters (Paul Newman and Robert Redford) to con a mob boss (Robert Shaw). The story was inspired by real-life con games perpetrated by the brothers Fred and Charley Gondorff. The title phrase refers to the moment when a con artist finishes the "play" and takes the mark's money. If a con game is successful, the mark does not realize they have been "taken" (cheated), at least not until the con artists are long gone.

Come watch films with others, eat popcorn (we will bring some, and we encourage you to bring snacks to share as well) and after the screening we can share in a discussion of the films. $2 donation (notaflof)

Though much of technology is well-deserving of critique and scrutiny, we work to shape the new world within the context of the old. Through this series of hacktivism workshops, we want to both encourage your interest in technology and provide a way for all of us to exercise our radical politics. If you’ve ever soldered something and enjoyed it, or if you’ve ever learned a programming language and felt brilliant, or if you’ve ever designed something that worked perfectly, we'd like to share more of that with you in an environment where men, women, and trans folks can connect. **First Friday Art Opening- photography by Kyle Sanders- 6pm-8pm

These images began after I left the cold of the forest to join the working society again, returning to rent a room and share my life with housemates. I moved in intending to make art, but none of the images produced were conceived by this plan. I began to continue a previous interest with human/urban decay and public art, shooting compulsively, trying a variety of lighting and weather. I pursued this idea here locally, as well as San Francisco and Los Angeles.
