Thursday! Friday! Saturday!

Three Solid Days at SubRosa!

-Thursday Sept. 19th-  Women/Trans/Queer Open Mic is back!‏

This Thursday is not only the full moon but also Women/Trans/Queer open mic at SubRosa. After spending weeks with my radical queer friends in the northwest, I have been longing for some queer community time. Which is to say I hope some of you can make it Thursday.

Open mic is a space for you to share yourself in anyway that feels right to you. You can read a story, poem or journal entry that feels important to you. You can sing or play a song you are excited about. You can make other people act out weird or funny things you think of.  You can ask questions you need help answering. You can rant about shit that pisses you off. And you can just come and soak it all up. You can expect a little bit of full moon magic but what happens next is out of our hands.

We'll be open at 7pm, show starts at 8pm. Donations appreciated (notaflof)

-Saturday Mar. 31st- Insurgent Theatre is touring with "In the Belly", a play focusing on issues of prison abolition. 8pm

In the belly is where things digest, where they are broken down so their value can be extracted. This is where things are made to rot. If our
society is a beast, its belly is... the prison system. This work from Insurgent Theatre seeks to manifest imprisonment on stage, overlays it
with critical analysis of the system, and follows up with in-depth discussion about abolishing prison in America.

Created in workshop by Weslie Coleman, Kate Pleuss, and Ben Turk, with assistance from Harmony Bench and Rebecca Riley. Touring North America. Raising funds for RedBird Prison Abolition. Supporting prisoners in Ohio.

This show contains nudity, violence and other sad realities of the US prison system.

More info here: http://insurgenttheatre.org/adseg.html & RedBirdPrisonAbolition.org

-Sunday Apr. 1st- Prison Penpal, 3-5pm (a Free Skool class)

We will communicate with prisoners, as well as each other, in order to begin to build a community of support locally and nationally. The focus will be LGBTQ prisoners, but not limited to. We will explore current and historic issues within the United States prison system, and intersections of race, class, gender, sexuality, etc. in a penal state and the ways that people can resist. Extended commitment to your pen-pal is preferred. Anyone not respecting the safety of those in correspondence or around them will be asked to leave. Requirements: A willingness to forget previous biases.

-Tuesday Oct. 4th: Sustainable Cycles: Bicycle Down the West Coast, Meet Women, Talk about Menstrual Cups, and Live on $4 a Day- 6-9pm

**Two years ago, after graduating from college, Toni and Sarah met at a dance festival in North Carolina and decided to ride bicycles from Albany, NY to Ann Arbor, MI— for the adventure, to see some world, to make connections to people, and to see where we got to without any plans.

So recently we had this idea… to go on another bike trip, with more of a purpose: to bike down the West coast and talk to women that we meet along the way, make woman-to-woman connections and convince them to switch to using a menstrual cup. One-at-a-time spread this information to women who otherwise might never have access to learning about non-disposable menstrual options. It seems to me that the number one way this revolution grows is through personal testimony of friends-to-friends.

Some things to do this week!

This Week At SubRosa, March 21st-28th

-Monday Mar. 21st: 2 Free Skool classes!

**Heliostat Hackers: Solar Hacking- 10am (a Free Skool class)
Using the sun to light and heat your indoor location. We will discuss the use of and making of a low cost heliostat to turn the ever moving rays of the sun into a stationary more usable beam. With Chris.

**Wireless Health Damage and Smart Meters- 5-7pm (a Free Skool class)
If you don't trust wireless devices, are you a luddite tin foil hat weirdo or just someone with good instincts? New scientific findings of health damage from wireless microwave radiation emitted by cell phones, wifi, and cordless phones are piling up just as PG&E tries to force its powerful wireless equipped 'smart' meters on every home and business in California. But people are fighting back. Learn the facts about EMF and health, how we can resist fascist privacy invading greenwashed power plots, and construct a relocalized energy system that empowers, not oppresses people. Requirements: We ask that cell phones and wifi be turned off for the class, out of respect for those who are electro-sensitive (which is really all of us). With Joshua Hart.

-Wednesday Mar. 23rd: Whow! A Lot Happening!

**Furniture Making- 10am (a Free Skool class)
Creative use of found materials and design techniques will be discussed and demonstrated. Only material availability and motivation will limit us in this class. With Chris.

**Herbs Strategies for Acute and Chronic Sinusitis: 11am-1pm (a Free Skool class)
We'll discuss herbal support for acute and chronic sinusitis. We'll address causes: viruses, allergies, working and living conditions, etc. Dietary, herbal, and lifestyle suggestions will be provided. Requirements: Bring pen and paper for notes. With Red Root Herbal Collective.

**Radical Film Night- 7:30pm- The Sting (This month's theme is Crime Pays!)
The Sting is a 1973 American caper film set in September 1936 that involves a complicated plot by two professional grifters (Paul Newman and Robert Redford) to con a mob boss (Robert Shaw). The story was inspired by real-life con games perpetrated by the brothers Fred and Charley Gondorff. The title phrase refers to the moment when a con artist finishes the "play" and takes the mark's money. If a con game is successful, the mark does not realize they have been "taken" (cheated), at least not until the con artists are long gone.

Come watch films with others, eat popcorn (we will bring some, and we encourage you to bring snacks to share as well) and after the screening we can share in a discussion of the films. $2 donation (notaflof)

-Thursday Mar. 24th: Two to-dos

**Hacktivism 103- 5-7pm (a Free Skool class)
Though much of technology is well-deserving of critique and scrutiny, we work to shape the new world within the context of the old. Through this series of hacktivism workshops, we want to both encourage your interest in technology and provide a way for all of us to exercise our radical politics. If you’ve ever soldered something and enjoyed it, or if you’ve ever learned a programming language and felt brilliant, or if you’ve ever designed something that worked perfectly, we'd like to share more of that with you in an environment where men, women, and trans folks can connect. Requirements: An interest to learn. Some technical savviness and sneakiness. Wtih UBEW.

**Open Mic- sign ups 7:30pm and begins 8pm

Dungeons & Dragons is a game in which people play within an imaginary world together, becoming heroes and going on mythic adventures. Moreover, D&D can build friendships, train your imagination, develop your creative problem solving, and build political and spiritual consciousness. D&D can be set in a world of rebellion, Empire, good versus evil - a world much like our own. In 1982, Ari Folman was a 19-year-old infantry soldier in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). In 2006, he meets with a friend from his army service period, who tells him of the nightmares connected to his experiences from the Lebanon War. Folman is surprised to find that he does not remember a thing from that period. This Week At SubRosa, Feb. 14th-20th

This Week at SubRosa, February 14th-20th

-Wednesday Feb. 16th:
Radical Film Night- "Piece by Piece"- 7:30pm

Piece by Piece documents the history of San Francisco’s controversial graffiti art movement, with a fast-paced journey into the world of San Francisco street art, as seen through the eye of the artists. Chronicling more than 20 years of creation and destruction — honestly, accurately, and critically, the film takes you alongside those who lived in what is arguably one of the most influential youth cultures of our time.

San Francisco’s graffiti style arose in the period from 1983 to 1993. Piece by Piece starts by documenting what laid the groundwork for today’s Bay Area graffiti: “Cholo” writing and the impact of PBS’s 1983 documentary, Style Wars. The film includes not only San Francisco’s graffiti originals, but also commentary from noted New York “writers” such as Seen, Cope 2, and Case 2. It also covers the tragedy of Dream One, a San Francisco graffiti pioneer and a vocal figurehead in Bay Area urban welfare activism.

From 1993 to 2000, San Francisco became an international magnet for ground-breaking graffiti styles yet to be seen in other parts of the world. The film elaborates on what it takes to establish credibility among the graffiti community, featuring classic works from KR and the horses of Reminisce; and documenting the creative expression of these and other “writers.” The film also features well-known graffiti artists such as Grey, Buter, Joro, Norm, and Barry McGee (Twist). review from: http://ishogun.com
